The winter garden is an evolution of the greenhouse, a structure already in use during the Roman Empire. During the 1500s it was transformed into French orangeries and English greenhouses or conservatories, which housed plants that needed constant heat and were open to the public. «In the Victorian era the structures became metallic, with glass surfaces, even inclined, decorated in Art Nouveau style.
