Travelling with L’Officina dei Giardini, in the heart of Lombardia
July 14, 2024
Enchanting lakes, historic cities and nature reserves, each with its own uniqueness and charm: northern Italy offers a variety of landscapes and experiences that satisfy nature lovers and culture enthusiasts alike.
Here is an itinerary through five unforgettable stops: Varese Lake, Como Lake, the city of Bergamo, Garda Lake and the Mincio Park in Mantua. Each place offers unique opportunities to discover the beauty, history and gastronomy of this extraordinary region. Each place holds a great little masterpiece from L’Officina dei Giardini. Get ready for a journey that will remain in your heart.
Varese Lake
Varese Lake is a place of peace and serenity, perfect for those seeking a break from the daily hustle and bustle. You can stroll along the shores of the lake, take a bike ride on the surrounding bike path or simply relax while enjoying the view of the Alps in the distance. Not to be missed is a visit to Borgo di Mustonate, a charming establishment offering charming accommodation surrounded by nature. Here Francesco Aletti Montano, descendant of a family of bankers, has succeeded in realising an innovative neo-rural project inspired by the places of his youth.
You will find traces of L’Officina dei Giardini in every corner: we have created a roof for the stable, several gazebos, an aviary and window frames. The owner, a lover of horses and period carriages, was for years Italian champion of traditional hacks, an equestrian speciality also practised by Philip of Edinburgh, who signed the preface to the volume ‘Carriages. Tradition and elegance of the long reins’, by Carlo Gnecchi Ruscone, edited by Aletti Montano.
Como Lake
Continuing the journey, Como Lake welcomes you with its picture-postcard scenery: mountains plunging into deep waters and villages reflected in the lake. After a visit to the historic villas, a boat ride and a good risotto with perch, our advice is to stay in Moltrasio, where Hotel Passalacqua offers spectacular views and impeccable service: it is not for nothing that it is the winner of the first edition of The World’s 50 Best Hotels.
Here L’Officina dei Giardini has created the gymnasium in the green: leaning against the stone wall of one of the terraces, it has an iron and glass roof, a super-slim full-section steel profile and heat-insulating safety glass. The roof is protected by a special bamboo canopy, which provides shade for the interior machinery and protects guests from the sun. But by the time you arrive, we may have achieved something else surprising…
City of Bergamo
The city of Bergamo, with its charming Upper Town and lively Lower Town, is a destination that combines history and modernity. Stroll along the ancient Venetian walls, visit the magnificent Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore and lose yourself in the narrow medieval streets. For an unforgettable dining experience, visit Ristorante Da Vittorio in Cantalupa, where you can enjoy refined dishes that celebrate Lombard tradition with a modern twist.
L’Officina dei Giardini created the pavilion in front of the restaurant’s main terrace: an imposing structure but light to the eye, with iron uprights decorated with studs, a top knob, a flower plate for anchoring to the ground and iron panels. Structural and decorative brackets with a circle motif and single-curved ribs complete the work, along with decorative forged iron top elements. The fabric covering brings freshness and airiness to the room (here all the details). Don’t forget to try the famous “casoncelli alla bergamasca”.
Garda Lake
Garda Lake, the largest lake in Italy, offers a wide range of activities for all tastes. From windsurfing in Riva del Garda, to walks through the lemon groves of Limone sul Garda, to visits to the medieval castles of Sirmione and Malcesine. For an unforgettable stay treat yourself to the luxury Grand Hotel Villa Feltrinelli in Gargnano, an oasis of tranquillity with lush gardens and spectacular views of the lake. Here, you can relax in the hotel spa, take a boat trip or sample local wines and traditional dishes such as Garda trout.
The work of L’Officina dei Giardini has been extremely harmonious, respecting the original structures and the environment of the Villa, a combination of history and nature. We have been at Villa Feltrinelli since the early 2000s and the latest interventions are from this year (here all the details), but the conceptual continuity that unites them integrates them perfectly in the unicum of a timeless context.
The uncovered, unused terrace has been converted into a breakfast room and restaurant, thanks to the pavilion that transforms it into an extension over the garden. Inside the grove is the 4×4 open-plan winter garden with a four-pitch roof and lantern with opening vasistas. Among the possible variations of the gazebo, Villa Feltrinelli has chosen two extremely particular ones: the octagonal one by the swimming pool, and the white one intended for massages. Outdoor gazebos are a real trend and L’Officina dei Giardini has chosen with the Villa to make them in VEPA (all-glass packable glazing) which allow the vertical walls of the structure to be fully opened and closed for training sheltered from the weather and in complete freedom and privacy. Finally, three striking creations: a wooden roof-terrace with two-coloured curtains; a shaped copper canopy; an outdoor cabinet used as a bar near the gyms.
Mincio Park in Mantua
Finish your trip at the Mincio Park, a nature reserve stretching from the city of Mantua to Lake Garda. This park is the ideal place for nature lovers, with hiking and biking routes through forests, marshes and cultivated fields.
And since every proper holiday ends with shopping, in Bagnolo San Vito, near Mantua, you will find the Mantova Village, a complex offering cosy accommodation and shopping in the numerous outlet stores.
Here we are everywhere: L’Officina dei Giardini has created the iron and glass structure of the outlet and the outdoor dehors where you can stop and think about your next trip with us!
